The Rose of Sharon Block Challenge

The deadline for entries in the Rose of Sharon Block Challenge has now passed. We are delighted to report that we received in excess of 850 blocks. The tough decisions are now being made - how do you choose only 12 winners from such an array of beautiful blocks? Fortunately for me I don't have to make those decisions Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims have that challenge.

The twelve winners will be announced at Spring Quilt Market in Minneapolis accompanied by the release of the Rose of Sharon DVD and book.

Our wonderful partners have offered a very attractive prize package. Not only have the partners offered prizes, some of them are also contributing a percentage of net sales from the retail products that will be an offshoot of the project to the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative.

Thank you to (in alphabetical order): AccuQuilt, Bernina, Electric Quilt, Island Batik, Legacy (Pellon), Nine Patch Media, OESD, The Quilt Show, and That Patchwork Place. Their generous prize package is worth over $22,000 in total.

Hi! I'm Sharon Pederson.

WELCOME to my web site.

I have been quilting since 1986 and teaching since 1987. That's right, I started teaching one year after I made my first quilt. I live in the beautiful Comox Valley on Vancouver Island and in 1986 there were no quilt teachers here. After I had made half a dozen quilts I became the local 'expert' and reluctantly agreed to teach my first class. I was terrified. But, my students were enthusiastic and wanted more, so I added another class to the beginner class I'd taught, and it has just kept on growing.

I enjoy teaching – no, I love teaching – and I feel very strongly that students learn more in a relaxed atmosphere. My classes are full of fun – and information – but the emphasis is on making what we do enjoyable. After all, it is supposed to be fun.

In the spring of 2008 I received an invitation "I couldn't refuse". My friends, Elizabeth Phillips and Chris Manuel invited me to join with them in forming a company to produce instructional DVDs. I had been thinking about new ways to reach students and DVDs seemed to be the perfect solution. I can now 'go home' with every student who expresses a wish to have me in their sewing room as a consultant. Not only me, but other teachers also. How would you like to have Pamela Allen, Carol Doak, Ionne McCauley, Margaret Miller, Barbara Olson, Jackie Robinson, Barbara Shapel or Lorraine Torrence show you the perfect way to do their techniques? Our list of wonderful teachers is growing all the time and we invite you to visit the site often to see who else has 'dropped in'.

Please visit my companion site to see the list of exciting titles available now and the equally exciting list that is coming soon.
